How do the Free Upgrades operate?
When you purchase a licence for PhotoCat, your installation of PhotoCat will be registered as at the date you made the purchase. You can select free upgrades for 1 month, 12 months, or 3 years. Simply add the number of free upgrade months to the date on which you purchased PhotoCat to determine the date up to which you can get free upgrades. You can see this date in the Help -> Registration Details menu.
Every major and minor version of PhotoCat has a new release date. When PhotoCat runs it checks its version release date against your free upgrades date. If the release date is later than your free upgrades date, PhotoCat will only run in an un-registered mode, i.e. you will be limitied to 100 images in your database. If you already have more images than this then access to them will be restricted. For example:
  • PhotoCat version 2.1.0 has a release date of 10th July 2004. You download it in August 2004 and run it in restricted mode.
  • you purchase a PhotoCat licence on 11th October 2004 with 12 months of free upgrades. Your 2.1.0 version now runs in unrestricted mode and will continue to do so indefinately
  • you also have free upgrades until 11th October 2005
  • PhotoCat 2.2.0 is released on 3rd December 2004
  • on 5th December 2004 you download and use this version fully licenced as your free upgrades last past the 2.2.0 release date
  • PhotoCat 2.3.0 is released on 14th August 2005
  • on 11th November 2005 you download and use this version fully licenced as your free upgrades last past the 2.3.0 release date
PhotoCat does not check the date on which you download the software, it checks the version release date and the free upgrades date.
  • PhotoCat 2.4.0 is released on 15th February 2006
  • if you download this version you will not be able to run PhotoCat in a licenced mode - you will be restricted to 100 images only as your free upgrade period expires before the release date of version 2.4.0
  • to use 2.4.0 you will need to purchase a new licence

What happens if I install a version that is outside my Free Upgrades period?
You will only be able to access the first 100 images in your database. To use the new version you will need to purchase a new licence in order to once again access the entire catalogue.
To avoid this issue you should make a backup of your old PhotoCat installation file that you originally downloaded before you download the new version. If the new version is outside your free upgrade period you will need to un-install the new version and then re-install your earlier version.
You can also check the release date of the new version on the PhotoCat download page (next to the Download Now button) to make sure it is within your free upgrade period.

What does the letter mean in the PhotoCat version number?
Generally PhotoCat has a major release version number, such as 2.0.8 etc. There may also be maintenance releases that address some minor processing problem within the software. These maintenance releases will have a letter suffixed onto the major release number, e.g. 2.0.8a. Only major releases have a new release date. A maintenance release will not receive a new release date and therefore will not affect the free upgrade period for that version of PhotoCat. Maintenance release are only indicated this way prior to version 2.1. After version 2.1, maintenance releases are indicated by the third number in the version, e.g. the 3 in version 2.1.3. There will no longer be a letter in the version number.

What is the security key that is needed when I purchase a PhotoCat licence?
The security key is a text code that you make up. It can be any normal characters (letters, digits, #$% etc.) up to ten characters in length. Even though it will be e-mailed to you after you have successfully purchased a licence, you should rememebr this key. It is required when you register PhotoCat and will also be required when contacting Conquest Enterprises for support questions.

You will need to download and install the Microsoft® .NET environment from Microsoft®.

If you get this message when installing PhotoCat:
Please download and install MDAC - see http://www.conent.com/PhotoCat
You will need to download and install the Microsoft® Data Access Components from Microsoft®.

Are maintenance releases free?
All downloads of PhotoCat are free. However, to use PhotoCat in an un-restricted mode you will need to purchase a licence. Assuming you have a valid licence then all maintenace releases will run un-restricted if their version release date is within your free upgrades period. A version is indicated by the first two numbers of the version number, e.g. 2.1 in version 2.1.3. The maintenance release number in this example is 3.

What is the difference between the standard and commercial editions?
Predominantly the commercial edition is for use by commercial organisations or individuals using PhotoCat in a process that relates to business. It is generally up to the integrity of the users to pay the appropriate commercial fee if using PhotoCat in a business related operation. However, there are some minor differences between the two editions.
  • firstly, in the commercial edition, the 'Release Details' is available from the main image screen. Here you can track information against individual copies of images.
  • also, you are able to have more than one multi value data tree, e.g. 'Subjects' is a multi value data tree. The commercial edition allows you to create other attribute lists similar to 'Subjects'.
